prime rate

prime rate
The rate of interest charged by US banks to their best borrowers. This is not the same as the UK base rate, as even the best borrowers in the UK normally pay a margin over the base rate for an overdraft. The prime rate is therefore a lending rate, while the base rate is a yardstick.
